Chief Lee Douglas, III began serving as Acting Newark Chief of Police on January 1, 2021.

A 25-year veteran of the Newark Police Division, Chief Douglas previously served as Commander of the Executive Protection Unit and as Commander of the 5th Precinct, located in Newark’s South Ward.

A lifelong Newarker, Chief Douglas is a graduate of Essex Catholic High School and continued his studies at Stockton College prior to joining the Newark Police Division in 1996.

Upon graduating the Police Academy, Chief Douglas was assigned to the 3rd Precinct’s Patrol Division, where he distinguished himself as a hardworking and knowledgeable police officer. He was later detailed to the Detective Squad as an investigator.

In 2001, Chief Douglas was assigned to the Criminal Gang Intelligence Unit, where he worked with the New Jersey State Police Organized Crime Unit. In 2007, he was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to the Major Crime Division.

Chief Douglas has been decorated on numerous occasions for outstanding performance in the line of duty.

He is passionately dedicated to serving the residents, visitors and businesses of the City of Newark.
